What is a citation?
A citation is an online directory reference to your business.
The process is simple: you have to provide online business directories with your business’s name, address and phone number (NAP). Depending on the business directory, you can also supply other information such as your opening hours, products and services, or business category.
The more online references you get, the better. Google counts the number of links to your website to rank it and determine how relevant it is in search results.
Remember to be consistent when doing local citations. It is important that the information that you provide are the same across all websites, otherwise it will confuse Google. You should choose a cohesive format when filling your details across different online business directories. For instance, decide if you want to use abbreviations (Limited or Ltd?), full address (building name? floor?), space in phone number, etc.
Local citations are extremely effective when it comes to ranking your business in your area. By entering your NAP in key business directories, your chances of being listed and appearing on the first page of Google will dramatically increase.
It happens that sometimes your business has already been listed by the directory itself. If this is the case, you can claim it.
Finally, if you want to start listing your business, you should begin with Google My Business and Yell, as these are the ones with the highest citations authority.
